Many mass-market bee houses cause more problems than they solve. The wrong design, build, and materials can put bee cocoons in danger, resulting in many of your baby bees not making it to the winterization stage.
At Kind Bee Farms, we paid special attention to designing a bee house that aligns with the nesting habits and needs of leafcutter bees. With our Bee House, your cocoons will stay safe and sound, from their initial nesting to the hatching process. Keep reading to learn why our Bee House is your go-to choice for your leafcutter bees, and where you can find one in our Shop!
Sturdy Materials and Design
Bee houses are installed outdoors and need to be durable enough to withstand fluctuating weather conditions.
Some mass-manufactured bee houses are made from low-quality materials that do not withstand conditions such as wind and rain very well. Lower-grade wood will warp and split over time, compromising its structural integrity and putting your bee cocoons at risk.
Our model from Kind Bee Farms is constructed from sturdy acacia wood. This material is tough and weather-resistant, holding up against summer storms. Our bee house is durable and can be reused for up to several growth seasons before it needs to be replaced!
Offers Protection from the Elements
We not only use high-quality wood to build our bee house, but we also have a special design that provides the cocoons further protection from the elements!
The rooftop of our bee house features a veranda, which provides a secondary shield from harsh weather conditions. This helps prevent the bee cocoons from getting drenched during downpours or being blown about during windstorms.
Our design also features space aeration, which makes it resistant to moisture damage like mould, mildew, and bacterial growth.
Safe Tubes for Cocoons
There are many different materials used to construct nesting tubes for solitary bees. Common bee tubes you’ll see on the market include phragmite reeds, wooden laminates, glass, plastic, and bamboo. These materials are not ideal choices for leafcutter bees.
Tubes like phragmites tend to attract pests, which will eat or destroy the resting cocoons. Wood materials, such as laminates and bamboo, can cut bees’ wings when they fly in and out, which can impede their ability to fly and pollinate.
At Kind Bee Farms, we fill our nesting boxes with paper straw nesting tubes. The texture and environment are very similar to the tubes that leafcutters form in the wild, and their smooth, soft surface prevents the bees from getting hurt!
Simple Installation and Storage
You don’t need to worry about any complicated or expensive set-ups; our bee house is very simple to install in your yard! It can be easily nailed or hung on a fence post, garage wall, or a decorative gardening implement.
All you have to do is mount it within 300 feet of your garden and 4 feet off the ground to keep your bees close to the plants and away from pesky ground critters.
Once the time comes to put your bee cocoons into storage, all you need to do is remove the bee house from its mount and store it in a cool, dry area. Read this blog for a few winter storage tips!
