Kind Bee Building Blocks: Why Is Pollination So Important?

Pollination is a vital part of our global ecosystem, and our leafcutter bees from Kind Bee Farms help keep this work going! But why is pollination so important? Below, we will discuss a few reasons why we need pollinators like leafcutter bees to enjoy healthy food, clean air, and lush plants and flowers!

Keep reading to learn how you can help improve the pollination rate in your area and order leaf-cutter bees from our Shop (P.S., teachers and homeschool parents: if your kids are currently learning about pollination, use this blog as a fact sheet for your next lesson)!

What Is Pollination, and How Does It Work?

“Pollination” occurs when flower pollen is carried from one plant to another. Pollen is a form of fertilizer, and regular pollination helps flowering plants get larger and grow fruits and seeds.

Some plants are self-pollinating and can transfer pollen from one part of the plant to another on their own. However, most plants rely on pollen from a different plant for proper fertilization.

So, how is the pollen transferred?

  1. Flowers produce nectar, which pollinators like leafcutter bees love to snack on! When they land on flowers to drink nectar, pollen attaches to their bodies from the flower’s anthers (the male part of the plant).
  2. When pollinators move to the next flower, the pollen moves with them and spreads onto the stigma (the female part of the plant).
  3. As these flying friends move from flower to flower, they continue to collect and spread pollen, helping plants grow bigger, stronger, and more lush!

Why Do We Need Pollinators?

So, why is pollination so important? Simply put, we wouldn’t be able to live without the hard work of pollinators like leafcutter bees! Here are a few ways these active workers benefit our planet:

  • Grow healthy food: Nearly 80% of the crops worldwide rely on busy pollinators to produce high crop yields and feed the population. Approximately 30% of these crops consist of the edible plants, fruits, and vegetables that make up our diets.
  • Breathe clean air: Plants that rely on pollination help purify the air by releasing oxygen that absorbs harmful pollutants. These same plants also assist in carbon sequestration by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Enjoy clean water and soil: Flowering plants play a big role in the water cycle. They help purify water and return moisture to the atmosphere. They also prevent soil erosion, which allows plants to continue growing. These plants rely on cross-pollination from busy pollinators, such as leafcutter bees, to maintain the water cycle!
  • Maintain animal populations: Just like humans, animals need healthy food to survive. The more pollinators in the wild, the more plants for deer, foxes, bears, and other creatures to feed on!

Can We Improve Pollination Rates?

Our ecosystem relies on the powerful effects that pollinators have to offer, but did you know that the rate of bee pollination is declining worldwide?

Bee populations are dwindling due to issues like environmental changes, diseases, and the harmful effects of pesticides. If we lose too many bees, this can disrupt our planet’s natural cycles.

But don’t worry: that’s where our team at Kind Bee Farms comes in! For several years, we have been raising leafcutter bees on our Saskatchewan-based alfalfa farm and are passionate about introducing these effective pollinators to communities across North America.

If you want to help increase bee populations and improve pollination, you can order leaf-cutter bees from our Online Shop.

Fun Facts About Leafcutter Bees

  • Leafcutter bees are fast, gentle, and effective pollinators, known for boosting the growth of many plants and flowers, and helping to increase pollination.
  • Leafcutter bees pollinate 20 times faster than honey bees, which is how they got the name “superpollinators!”
  • Leafcutter bees are solitary and do not nest in hives; they like their own company. But don’t worry, these docile critters are still very friendly and don’t sting, making them excellent gardening and farming companions!
