Keep reading to learn more about these super pollinators and how to set up their home.
What Are Leafcutter Bees?
Leafcutter bees are solitary bees known as “super pollinators!” Their tiny bodies and fast flying allow them to visit more flowers and plants per day than honey bees.
Unlike honey bees, which famously live in hives and work as a team, leafcutter bees are independent little powerhouses that live alone in nesting tubes. They use these tubes to rest and lay their eggs, providing even more hard workers for your garden throughout the summer. They’re naturally non-aggressive, so there is no worry about getting stung—that’s why we call them Kind Bees!
What’s Included in Our Bee Pollinator Kit
The Pollinator Kit from Kind Bee Farms gives your leafcutter bees a safe and cozy place to call home. The full kit includes the following items:
The Bee House
The Bee House is the perfect shelter for your super pollinators! This tiny wooden house is specifically designed for leafcutter bees and features an overhanging roof to protect them from wind and rain. Underneath the roof is a little box for the nesting tubes, where your bees will sleep and lay their eggs.
Leafcutter Bee Nesting Tubes
Our nesting tubes provide a cozy resting place for your buzzing buddies! While many bee houses on the market have bamboo nesting tubes, we have designed our bee home for the health and welfare of leafcutter bees. Our smooth, paperlike tubes protect the bees from harming their wings and bodies so they can fly and work at full capacity.
Leafcutter Bee Cocoons
Our leafcutter bees come from our commercial farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, gathered from our alfalfa fields. They are raised during summer in our bespoke metal bee huts and are chalkbrood-free, ensuring they are healthy and ready to work when they arrive at your door.
Leafcutter bees spend up to 23 days growing in their cocoons. The males hatch between days 18 and 20, while the females hatch between days 21 and 23. When you order our bees, we ship them out on days 16 or 17 of their hatching cycle, giving them 3-5 days to finish hatching. When you receive your bees at your door, all your bees will be almost ready to fly off to work!
How to Set Up the Bee House
Setting up the Bee House is fast and easy! When it arrives at your door, the Bee House will already have the nesting tubes in place, so all you have to do is put it in a safe location near your plants and flowers (ideally within 300 ft). The spot should be dry and give the bees plenty of morning sun.
You will also want to plant the Bee House no higher than 4 ft off the ground. After setting the house in place, it is time to release your bees! Slowly remove the stickers on the sides of your orange bee box, open the lid, and watch all your little worker bees fly off to pollinate your plants. Place the box on the shelf inside the bee house, and enjoy seeing them hard at work.
