Why Our Ecosystem Needs Pollinators
Pollinators are essential to our earth! In fact, nearly 80% of the crops worldwide require pollination from insects and animals.
Active pollinators produce higher crop yields and quality produce and allow plants to thrive so they can play other roles in our ecosystem, such as:
- Providing healthy and nutrient-rich foods to humans and animals
- Clean air from flowering plants that produce oxygen
- Purified water
- Firm soil that encourages plant reproduction
How Leafcutter Bees Make a Difference
Introducing pollinators like leafcutter bees can help your plants and local ecosystem thrive! These hard-working bees are easy to look after, work around, and pollinate at an accelerated rate.
Here are a few ways leafcutter bees play an active role in sustainable pollination:
Nature’s “Superpollinators”
Leafcutter bees can pollinate at a 1:20 ratio compared to honey bees, making them a great choice for large crops that need a lot of attention!
These bees can pollinate so quickly due to their quick flying abilities. Their fuzzy bellies have a pollen brush that allows them to easily spread pollen over plants and flowers!
Aid Soil Health
Did you know that leafcutter bee cocoons and chaff are compostable? As long as your cocoons are empty, you can mix them with the other food and waste in your compost heap.
This will benefit your soil with plenty of nutrients to encourage even more plant growth!
Gentle Nature
There is a reason why we call them “kind” bees! Leafcutter bees are naturally gentle, docile creatures, making them very easy to work around as you tend your plants or crops.
You do not need to worry about getting stung or bitten by these hard workers!
Pollination Diversity
Leafcutter bees will visit any number of low-growing plants, from pansies to squash!
To ensure that every inch of your garden receives adequate pollination, we recommend including a variety of low-growing plants in each area of your plot.
You can plan your garden around plants and flowers that leafcutter bees are most attracted to! Some of their favourites include:
- Alliums
- Bee Balm
- Cosmos
- Echinacea
- Blueberries
- Cucumbers
- And more!
Promotes Pest Control
Plants like basil, hyssop, marigolds, and borage can help deter certain pests, which is why many growers include them in their gardens.
Consistent pollination from your leafcutter bees will ensure your pest-control plants continue to thrive and discourage unwanted invaders!
Introducing Leafcutter Bees? Keep These Things in Mind
Are you ready to buy your very own leafcutter bees? Get ready to see your crops explode with growth!
Before you place an order, make sure to keep these things in mind:
Choose the right shipping date. Leafcutters are summer bees, so make sure to set your order date for when your garden is already in bloom! Choose a shipping date when temperatures are above 75°F (20°C).
Need to adjust your date? Don’t worry! Send an email to [email protected], and we’ll make the switch!
Choose the right location. To ensure your bees reach all your plants, mount your bee house within 300ft of your plants and 4ft off the ground to prevent pests from infiltrating!
Avoid organic sprays or insecticides. While these may remove unwanted visitors, they will harm your leafcutter bees and other pollinators working in your garden.
Order a fresh bee box and nesting tubes every year. While leafcutter bees will lay eggs for the next growing season, you still need to replenish your supply to get an adequate number of pollinators in your garden!
As the box and tubes wear, they can mould, spreading diseases to the new bee larvae. A new box and set of tubes each year will keep your bees healthy and hard at work!
Not all bee larvae will always survive. Do not panic if some of your bees do not hatch. Even if you order your box at the right time, sometimes nature takes its course.
This is completely normal, and you will still get plenty of fast-flying friends from the other cocoons!
